FDA introduces New Electronic Registration Option for Acidified and Low-Acid Canned Foods
Manufacturers, processors or packers of acidified and low-acid canned foods and persons who are authorized to act on their behalf will now be able to register their facilities electronically.
On July 16, 2012, FDA released a guidance document, “Guidance for Industry –Electronic Submission of FDA Form 2541 and Administrative Procedures for Submission of FDA form 2541a and FDA form 2541c.” The guidance document explains the online submission process. FDA intends for the electronic registration to expedite the process of registering acidified foods (AF) and low-acid canned foods (LACF) facilities. FDA will continue to accept paper submissions of form FDA 2541, form FDA 2541a and 2541c.
FDA defines acidified foods (AF) as having an “…equilibrium pH of 4.6 or below and a water activity (aw) greater than 0.85.” Low-acid canned foods (LACF) are defined as “any food (other than alcoholic beverages) with a finished equilibrium pH greater than 4.6 and a water activity greater than .85, excluding tomatoes and tomato products having a finished equilibrium pH less than 4.7.”
